IIMs: Myth vs Reality — Separating Hype from Facts for CAT Aspirants

Some of these beliefs are based on real experiences, while others have been amplified by social media, rankings and placement headlines. Understanding the IIM myth vs reality can help CAT aspirants make decisions based on data rather than hype.

For many CAT aspirants, getting into an IIM is considered the ultimate MBA goal. But along with the reputation comes a long list of assumptions: only IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Calcutta are worth targeting, non-engineers struggle in the classroom, a lower CAT percentile means the IIM dream is over, and an IIM degree automatically guarantees a high-paying job.

Myth 1: Only IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Calcutta Matter

Reality: The IIM ecosystem is much broader

IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta have exceptional reputations, but limiting the definition of a good IIM to these three institutes is an oversimplification.

Institutes such as IIM Kozhikode, IIM Lucknow, IIM Indore and several newer IIMs have established strong academic and corporate ecosystems of their own. For example, IIM Bangalore's 2026 placement cycle recorded 664 offers from 177 firms for 596 students, with consulting accounting for 45% of offers.

IIM Indore's latest available final placement report recorded 225+ recruiters, an average package of ₹29.57 lakh and a median package of ₹27 lakh.

The lesson is simple: institute quality should not be judged only by whether its name belongs to the traditional "ABC" group.

Myth 2: A Low Percentile Means You Cannot Get an IIM

Reality: CAT percentile is important, but admission is not based on percentile alone

One of the most persistent IIM myths is that a particular CAT percentile automatically determines whether a candidate will or will not enter an IIM.

In reality, IIM selection policies consider multiple factors. IIM Ahmedabad, for example, states that its MBA selection considers CAT performance, past academic performance, analytical writing and personal interview performance. Its admitted students come from arts, commerce, science, engineering, technology, medicine and other backgrounds.

IIM Bangalore's 2026 admission document also makes an important distinction: the published percentile cut-offs are minimum requirements for the first shortlist, and the scores of candidates actually called for interviews may be higher. For the general category, the minimum aggregate percentile listed for the PGP 2026–28 first shortlist was 85.

Therefore, there is no universal "IIM percentile" that guarantees admission.

Myth 3: Non-Engineers Cannot Survive at an IIM

Reality: IIM classrooms are designed for diverse academic backgrounds

The belief that IIMs are dominated by engineers and that students from commerce, humanities, science or other disciplines cannot compete is outdated.

IIM Ahmedabad explicitly states that its PGP attracts students from arts, commerce, science, engineering, technology, medicine and other professional streams.

Academic diversity can actually contribute to classroom discussions, case studies and team-based learning because management problems rarely require knowledge from only one discipline.

A non-engineering background may mean that a student needs additional preparation in quantitative subjects, but it does not automatically make an IIM classroom unsuitable.

Myth 4: IIM Placements Guarantee a Dream Job for Everyone

Reality: Strong placement ecosystems do not mean identical outcomes

The IIM placement myths surrounding salary figures are often created by focusing on the highest package or headline average.

IIM Ahmedabad's 2026 PGP placement process concluded with students placed across 26 cohorts, with recruiters spanning consulting, investment banking, private equity, technology, FMCG, healthcare, manufacturing and other sectors.

IIM Bangalore's 2026 cycle similarly demonstrated significant role diversity, with offers spread across consulting, technology/product management and investment banking.

However, a placement report does not mean every student receives the same role or salary. Career outcomes depend on academic performance, prior experience, skills, interview performance, role preferences and the recruitment market.

An IIM can provide access to strong recruiters. It cannot guarantee that every student will get their personal "dream job."

Myth 5: IIM Fees Are Unaffordable Without Loans

Reality: Financing options and financial aid can reduce the burden

IIM programmes can involve substantial fees, but saying that students must necessarily finance the entire cost through personal funds is inaccurate.

For example, IIM Bangalore lists the fee for its PGP 2026–28 at ₹26 lakh, excluding applicable taxes, along with a ₹30,000 caution deposit and mess advance. The institute also provides need-based financial aid ranging from 20% to 100% based on its assessment process.

IIM Bangalore also lists several merit and merit-cum-need scholarships.

Education loans are another commonly used financing route. Therefore, aspirants should calculate the total cost, available aid, loan terms and expected career outcomes rather than rejecting an IIM solely because of the headline fee.

How to Evaluate an IIM Beyond Rankings

Rankings can provide a starting point, but they should not be the only factor in deciding whether an IIM is right for you.

Consider:

  • Programme curriculum and specialisations

  • Placement quality and role diversity

  • Median and average compensation

  • Recruiter mix

  • Alumni network

  • Faculty and academic resources

  • Location and industry exposure

  • Batch size

  • Total programme cost

  • Scholarships and financial aid

  • Your preferred career path

For instance, IIM Ahmedabad itself emphasises the importance of standardised placement reporting through IPRS to improve transparency and comparability of placement information.

So, instead of asking only, "Which IIM is ranked highest?", ask, "Which IIM offers the strongest fit for my career goals, financial situation and profile?"

Final Words

Look Beyond the Hype Before Choosing an IIM

The truth about IIMs is more nuanced than either extreme. An IIM is neither an automatic ticket to a dream career nor simply a brand name that matters only if it is one of the oldest campuses.

For CAT aspirants, the smarter approach is to evaluate admission criteria, academic fit, placement data, fees, financial aid and career outcomes together. Use official institute reports wherever possible and treat rankings, social-media claims and salary headlines as supplementary information.

The right question is not simply "Is IIM worth it?" It is "Which IIM, which programme and which career outcome make sense for my profile?"

That shift from hype to evidence can help CAT aspirants make a far more informed MBA decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.Do I need 99+ percentile to get into an IIM?

There is no single percentile applicable to every IIM or candidate. Each institute follows its own admission criteria, and minimum qualifying cut-offs should not be confused with final shortlisting or admission thresholds.

Q.Can a non-engineer get into an IIM?

Yes. IIMs admit students from diverse academic backgrounds, including arts, commerce, science, medicine and engineering.
